Wow!

Heading home from the races on Saturday evening, I heard something that made me smile. The exciting gelding Fabrizio (High Chaparral x Desina), who just keeps on winning, well he won on Saturday over 1600m with 57.5kg in a time of 1.34.55. Three races later, the glamour mare Winx won over the same trip with .5kg less in a time of 1.36.18. Therefore Fabrizio won in a time that was 1.5 or so seconds quicker than Winx! Of course these are just times, but it is very interesting and justification of a great win by one of my favourite geldings, the Corumbene Stud bred son of High Chaparral.

So where to next for this gelding? Horses rarely win as well as this and now Fabrizio has won five from his eight starts. Mr Altomonte certainly has a very nice horse on his hands, and I will let the dust settle before deciding what we will do next with him. The funny thing is when George told me about this horse as a youngster, he wasn’t even going to send him to me. I believe the conversation went a little like this…

George Altomonte – Gai, I have a very nice High Chaparral gelding out here on the farm.

Gai – Well put him on the truck and send him into me.

George – He is a stayer Gai, he’s not a two-year-old (I had just trained Overreach to win the Golden Slipper for George)

Gai – Put him on the truck George.

George – Are you sure? He will take time like all these High Chap’s do.

Gai – The truck George! Please put him on the truck and send him in, I will get the best out of him.

And the rest is history. Of course a lot of talk now about Fabrizio will be directed at the Epsom in two weeks’ time, but there is still plenty of water to go under the bridge. This gelding is so lightly raced and I am sure there is still plenty more left in the tank. He will continue to improve and I am sure he will make a very nice stayer for George. Let’s see what happens.
