Range Rover Sport has been crowned 'SUV of the Year 2005' by BBC Top Gear at the magazine's annual awards celebration.
With over 20,000 sales around the world and 11 awards to its name, Range Rover sport is enjoying sweet success the world over.
Land Rover's managing director, Matthew Taylor, said: "These accolades represent a fantastic endorsement of all the investment and hard work that is going into re-vitalising the Land Rover range.."
Having been on sale since August, Range Rover Sport is the new thoroughbred in the performance SUV market. A combination of breath taking dynamic ability with world class comfort and refinement.
Up against the BMW X5 and Porsche Cayenne for the title 'best in class' Range Rover Sport demolishes its rivals by boasting it's off road / 4WD heritage.
Michael Harvey, Editor of BBC Top Gear magazine says "BMW and Porsche make world-beatingly-great sports cars, one or two of which look a bit like SUVs. Land Rover has only ever made great SUVs, one of which now goes a lot like a BMW or a Porsche."
The range topping Supercharged 4.2 litre V8 is the fastest and best-accelerating vehicle Land Rover has ever made and boasts some impressive performance figures :
0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. 287kW power at 5750rpm 550Nm maximum torque at 3500rpm.
As the supercharger is permanently employed to boost intake charge, the extra performance is present across the entire rev range - unlike an exhaust gas-driven turbo.
Also available is the normally aspirated 4.4 litre V8 - again boasting some pretty impressive figures :
220kW at 5500rpm and 425Nm of torque at 4000rpm is delivered by this quad cam V8 engine. As one of the worlds lightest, the V8 engine has a cylinder block and heads made from aluminium, while alloys are used in many other components to save weight.
The 2.7 litre Turbo Diesel V6 completes the range and is the latest generation of the common rail engine. Developing 140kW at 4000rpm and produces 440Nm of torque at 1900rpm the turbo diesel V6 operates typically 25% higher than previous systems giving greater fuel economy and lower emissions.
Range Rover Sport "..is the best 'driver's vehicle' that Land Rover has ever made," says Matthew Taylor.
"There is the traditional Land Rover Command driving position, yet the cockpit is more cocooning than the SUV norm. We believe the emphasis on the driving experience will make the Range Rover Sport an attractive proposition to those who currently drive luxury executive cars, as well as the more sporty 4x4s."
